What is the Political Courage Test?

California Congressional Election 2024 Political Courage Test

Pro-life Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes Do you support the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade?
U.S. Supreme Court ruled that abortion is a state issue. These Judges are approved by U.S. Senate. U.S. House of Representatives is wrong office for dealing with abortion issues.
No Do you support expanding federal funding to support social safety net programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
No Do you support a decrease in income taxes in order to balance the budget?
No Do you support a wealth tax in order to pay for public programs?
National debt and annual interest on the debt are most serious problems faced by the federal government. If federal government can only meet mandatory expenses, there will be no money for dealing with other issues.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations, unions, and individuals?
Unknown Position Do you support protecting government officials, including law enforcement officers, from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct?
Government officials is too broad a category for yes or no answer to this question.
Yes Do you support increasing defense spending?
Yes if possible (within budget constraints) and needed for defense or for new technology to keep up with adversaries.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth (e.g. grants, tax incentives)?
No Do you support the federal government increasing funding for affordable housing programs?
Yes Do you support the federal government taking action, beyond those of the Federal Reserve, to alleviate inflation?
All of this depends on what is needed to keep federal budget sustainable, which might require capping spending while waiting or helping economy to grow to point where increased revenue permit additional spending.
No Do you support the forgiveness of federal student loan debt?
Loan forgiveness is a bad idea. Once it starts, where does it end. I would support student loan payments taken from future support of institutions that originally benefited from these loans.
Yes Do you support requiring a government-issued identification in order to vote at the polls?
We seem to have little problem with requiring IDs for transactions that are much less important than voting.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal government allowing permits for drilling on public lands?
Both of these are a qualified yes. I support research funding for renewable energy, but construction should be private. Drilling determination should depend on site specific conditions.
No Do you generally support gun-control legislation (e.g. red flag laws, boyfriend loopholes)?
No with exception for court-orders based on prior aggressive behavior.
No Do you support a government-run (e.g. single-payer) healthcare program, such as Medicare-for-All?
No Do you support expanding paid family AND/OR medical leave benefits (e.g. maternity leave)?
Yes Should the government be able to regulate the cost of prescription drugs?
Government-run healthcare would turn into government-controlled healthcare, which I oppose. Expanded leave results in shifting costs to private employers, which leads to higher costs for everyone. There does need to be a mechanism for preventing price-gouging by drug companies, with direct regulation being a last resort.
Yes Do you support increasing security along the southern US border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship, regardless of their immigration status?
Preventing illegal immigration is a basic function of the federal government. Requiring return of immigrants who truly are fleeing for their lives would make us responsible for torture and execution in their home countries. But granting asylum should not put these immigrants in line ahead of those abiding by our laws.
Yes Do you support economic intervention as a means of resolving international conflicts?
Yes Do you support the US providing increased offensive military aid to Ukraine?
Yes to aid for Ukraine unless we are simply prolonging a lost cause.
Yes Do you generally support increased regulations on social media companies (e.g. Tik Tok, Facebook, etc.)?
My top priority would be a plan to achieve a sustainable federal budget that that does not create a crisis affecting all of us and would allow our children and future generations to have the same freedom and opportunities as we have had. Without this, our opinions about other matters will not matter.
